Powered stair-climbing equipment for different loads
An electric stair-climbing trolley and a hydraulic load platform offer different approaches to material handling on stairs. Weight is only the starting point: shape, balance, permitted orientation and turning room also determine the method.
Tracked electric stair climber
Independent powered tracks help manoeuvre a secured load. Joystick control allows measured changes in speed and direction, while powered load-angle adjustment helps position the item through transitions.
- Assess for tall appliances, cabinets and other suitable upright loads.
- Confirm the item’s balance and approved restraint points.
- Check available tilt and headroom across the full route.
Automatic angle functions and accessories depend on the machine supplied.
Hydraulic platform stair climber
A supported platform, independent track drive and hydraulic positioning provide control for suitable bulky loads. Platform travel helps adjust the load position; a lifting roller arrangement assists manoeuvring on suitable level areas.

- Check platform support against the item’s footprint.
- Allow room for the combined machine and load.

Rated capacity is not a route approval
The machine’s own weight, the load, protective materials, stairs and landing space all matter. Send the actual item specification rather than an estimate based on appearance. JB will confirm the applicable capacity and operating conditions for the equipment proposed.

The following items can be considered for specialist handling. Inclusion here is an invitation to assess the job; it does not mean every item can travel on every staircase.
Pianos and musical instruments
Identify the instrument type, dimensions and access. A grand piano and an upright may need different preparation, support and movement methods.

Include the model, empty weight and manufacturer’s transport requirements. Confirm disconnection, drainage and any restrictions on tilting before collection.
Safes and secure cabinets
Provide the safe’s specifications and whether it is anchored. Arrange authorised contents handling and agree who removes fixings before the moving crew arrives.
Gym equipment and ice baths
List machines separately, including any dismantling requirements. Long frames, projecting handles and narrow landings can be as significant as weight.
Vending and arcade machines
Flag glass panels, screens, loose internal parts and cash compartments. Confirm how the equipment should be emptied, secured and supported for transport.
Medical and laboratory equipment
Supply handling instructions from the equipment provider. Coordinate specialist disconnection, transport preparation, installation and calibration as separate responsibilities.

JB goes beyond supplying a machine

Getting an item up or down a staircase may leave an unloading problem, a raised threshold or a difficult final placement. JB can assess additional heavy-lifting equipment and specialised trucks as part of the same plan.
Gantry systems and controlled lifting
Where the job calls for supported lifting or a change of handling equipment, ask about a gantry system or other lifting support. The load, headroom, lifting points, working area and supporting surface determine what can be proposed.
Specialised trucks and loading support
Truck choice needs to suit both the item and the site. Include loading height, vehicle clearance, parking distance and the space available to unload. Tail-lift or crane-assisted arrangements can be assessed where required.
Dollies, skates and transfer equipment
A load may need different equipment on level floors, through entrances and at its destination. Agree the transitions between each stage so there is a workable route from the vehicle to the final position.
Protection, preparation and placement
Discuss floor coverings, corner protection, wrapping, casing and restraint requirements. Confirm what needs dismantling and who will reconnect or commission the equipment after JB completes the agreed placement.

Before moving day
Planning a stair-climber job across Sydney
Measure the whole route
Send a continuous walk-through video from the unloading point to the final position. Include stair widths, step dimensions, landings, doors, overhead restrictions and turns. Show any change of surface or level.
Coordinate access and building contacts
Ask building management about loading arrangements, service-lift access and permitted working hours. Nominate a contact who can open the route and explain any restrictions at each address.
Allow for traffic and loading time
Travel time is only part of the schedule. Allow for unloading, setting up protection and preparing the load. Check Live Traffic NSW for current incidents and planned roadworks when organising the arrival window.
Plan the handover
Agree the destination position and what happens after placement. Equipment suppliers, technicians and your own staff may need separate access for reconnection, testing or reopening the area.
Clear access supports controlled handling
Keep the working route available for the agreed operation. Flag wet or damaged surfaces, shared entrances and any changes since the assessment. A machine’s features do not replace preparation, competent operation or a suitable route.

Ask what is included, what is excluded and how waiting time or changes to the job will be handled. Compare the total proposed work rather than a machine-only rate with a fully managed removal.

Answers before you request a method
Can I hire a stair climber without a complete removal service?
Machine-only hire can be considered after JB confirms the item, route, delivery and collection plan, operator responsibility and equipment availability. A rated capacity alone does not confirm that a machine is suitable for a particular job.
What stair-climber capacity does JB assess?
JB assesses 400 kg rated red stair climbers and 800 kg rated blue stair climbers. The item, dimensions, weight distribution, stairs, landings, surfaces and operating space must all be reviewed before equipment is confirmed.
What happens for items above standard stair-climber bands?
Loads in the 601–800 kg range require coordinator review. One-tonne and heavier work is routed to a broader engineered heavy-removals assessment and is not treated as standard stair-climber hire.
How much does stair climber hire cost in Sydney?
Pricing depends on the equipment category, hire period, delivery, operator, crew, item weight and site access. JB provides a job-specific assessment after reviewing the item and route.
What heavy items can a stair climber move?
Common enquiries include pianos, safes, commercial fridges, machinery, copiers, gym equipment, sculptures and stone furniture. Every item still needs an equipment and access assessment.
What measurements and photos should I send?
Send the item dimensions and weight, narrowest doorway and stair width, every landing and turn, the stair surface, thresholds and final placement. Include the item, weight plate and a continuous route video when possible.
How does JB protect stairs and property?
JB reviews stair finishes, contact points, load distribution and the required protective materials. Equipment is not approved automatically for every timber, tile, marble or external surface.
Is an electric stair-climbing trolley suitable for my fridge?
Possibly, but the fridge’s weight is only one factor. Send its dimensions and manufacturer’s transport instructions, together with photos of the stairs and landings. Agree emptying, disconnection and any tilt restrictions before the move.
Do you provide gantries and other heavy-lifting equipment?
JB can assess gantry systems and other handling equipment alongside stair climbers. Explain any unloading, raised-level transfer or final-placement problem so the equipment can be considered as one coordinated method.
Can you provide a truck as well as the stair climber?
Ask for transport to be included in the assessment. Supply both addresses, vehicle-clearance information and loading arrangements so JB can consider the truck and loading support required.
Can the move happen after hours or on a weekend?
Include your preferred window and any fixed reopening deadline. Equipment, crew, building access and specialist availability need to be confirmed before a schedule is agreed.
