700kg Marble Sculpture Removal

Installed in 1990 · 2.06m tall · approx. 1,060kg combined load

The sculpture originally entered the building upright in its larger 1990 lift. The replacement lift had a smaller car. JB secured the sculpture to a 360kg stair climber and mechanically tilted it to pass into the reduced space.

The complete handling method

01

A route that had changed since 1990

The 700 kg marble sculpture had been placed in the building in 1990, when the original lift was large enough to carry it standing upright. The lift was later replaced with a smaller car, so the original installation method could not be reversed for the removal.

02

Planning around the replacement lift

The sculpture measured approximately 2.06 metres high. JB assessed its height, weight, base, corridor route, lift opening, internal car space and the clearance needed to change its angle. Lift technicians attended the operation to support safe coordination with the lift while the load was brought inside.

03

Protecting and securing the sculpture

The corridor floor and lift interior were protected before movement began. Padded blankets protected the contact areas between the marble and equipment. Multiple restraints secured the sculpture and its heavy base to the stair climber while the crew controlled the change of angle.

04

Just over one tonne under control

JB used the stair climber as a mechanical tilting and load-control platform rather than attempting to tip the sculpture manually. The sculpture weighed 700 kg and the stair climber approximately 360 kg. Together they created a load of about 1,060 kg, before adding the crew and ancillary protection.

05

The lift entry and result

The stair climber progressively lowered the sculpture from its standing position while maintaining support through the centre of the load. Once the profile matched the smaller lift, the team guided the protected sculpture across the threshold and fully into the car with the lift technicians present. The restricted-lift removal was completed safely.
