Heavy-Item Moving in Sydney: Crew Size, Job Time & Quotes

Build the crew and schedule around the assessed method. Separate moving attendance from machine shutdown, preparation and recommissioning.

How many crew are needed for a heavy-item move?

There is no reliable headcount based only on weight. The assessed method, equipment, access, working space, protection and communication requirements determine the crew arrangement.

For a commercial heavy move in Sydney, ask which roles need to be covered and whether they are included in the quote. Several functions may be performed by the same person where the assessed method allows; this is a responsibility list, not a minimum staffing formula.

Move coordination and equipment operation

Identify who leads the agreed sequence, operates the selected equipment and coordinates changes with the site contact.

Handling support and route control

Confirm the support and clearance-monitoring functions needed for the operation, including how the work interfaces with people elsewhere on site.

The customer’s release and receiving contacts also need to be named. Their presence does not automatically make them part of the moving crew.

How long does specialist heavy moving take?

Separate assessment and preparation from the on-site operation. A short physical travel distance can still involve substantial protection, setup, controlled transitions and final positioning.

Stage What to agree What can affect the time
Assessment and planning Information, inspection and preparation required. Unknown item details or unresolved access.
Technical release Who prepares and releases the equipment. Supplier availability and shutdown dependencies.
Site preparation Access, protection, equipment setup and site procedures. Restricted windows, inductions or other work.
Physical movement The assessed route and moving stages. Stairs, turns, transitions and loading arrangements.
Final placement Position, receiving contact and acceptance checks. Precision positioning or unresolved room layout.
Technical return to service Responsible supplier and completion criteria. Reconnection, testing or recommissioning outside the moving scope.

Ask the quote to distinguish the expected moving attendance from the business’s total downtime. They are not necessarily the same period.

Published JB examples of crew size and job time

These examples come from JB’s published Hercules project descriptions. They show the scope behind the numbers; they are not standard estimates for other jobs.

700kg glass arcade machine

The published case records three specialists and approximately 2.5 hours for the difficult stair component. That timing should not be read as a quote for another machine’s complete transport and installation.

Three brewing vessels

The published relocation of vessels weighing approximately one tonne each records five hours of planning and a six-hour relocation from Mona Vale to Brookvale.

Read the project scope and images on Hercules. Ask for the same clarity in your own quote: which stages the duration covers, which crew are included and what remains with other providers.

The examples also show why item weight alone cannot supply an accurate time estimate.

Planning factory downtime and commercial access windows

Tell the moving team which equipment must stay operational, when each item can be released and what needs to be ready first at the new location. A staged move may be assessed around those priorities.

Allocate technical responsibilities

Identify the people responsible for isolation, disconnection, preparation, reconnection and testing. Confirm the actual scope with them; moving an item into place does not automatically make it ready for production.

Confirm building and site requirements

Supply available loading windows, induction requirements and requested site documents. Confirm what applies to the actual work rather than assuming one generic checklist covers every workplace.

Record the next decision if something changes

Name the contact who can resolve delayed release, changed access or a different final position. Ask the coordinator to confirm any effect on scope or timing before treating the revision as agreed.

Connect those arrangements with JB’s Sydney commercial relocation service.

What should a heavy-item moving quote include?

Look for the item list, both locations, assessed access, moving stages, crew and equipment arrangement, protection, transport and final placement. Ask what is included, what is provisional and what belongs to another provider.

Confirm the pricing basis, applicable minimums, travel, taxes, payment arrangements and treatment of changed scope or waiting. Do not assume a smaller crew or shorter-looking route produces the lowest completed cost.

Use our specialist equipment guide to understand the proposed equipment stages, and the factory machinery stair-access brief when the route includes stairs.

Send what you know to JB’s heavy-item assessment team. Unknown technical information can be clarified during assessment rather than guessed in the enquiry.

Heavy-item crew, timing and quote questions

Can two people move a 500kg machine?

Weight alone cannot answer that. A suitable assessed method, equipment, route and crew roles must be confirmed; a two-person example from another job is not a staffing rule.

Does adding more removalists always make the job faster?

No. Restricted working space, equipment stages and the sequence can limit what extra people can contribute. Crew numbers should follow the method.

Can you give a fixed duration before seeing the access?

A useful duration needs a defined scope and sufficient information. JB can identify what further assessment is needed before confirming the schedule or quote.

Does moving time include machine shutdown and testing?

Only if those tasks are explicitly included in the agreed scope with the appropriate providers. Record physical movement and technical readiness separately.

Can a heavy commercial move happen after hours?

Discuss the requested window, site access and operating constraints with JB. Availability and the working arrangement need confirmation; after-hours work is not automatically cheaper.

What happens if the equipment is not ready when the crew arrives?

Tell the coordinator as early as possible. Confirm the next step and any implications under the agreed terms rather than assuming the team can proceed or the schedule remains unchanged.
