Your current home needs to be empty on Friday, but access to the new property is not confirmed. Packing everything for one direct delivery can leave you without essentials and with no agreed destination for the truck.
When the dates do not align, plan the relocation as separate stages. Packing, collection, storage, redelivery and unpacking each need their own timing and scope. You can prepare most of this while the final date remains uncertain.
Separate fixed dates from provisional dates
Write down when you must leave the current home, when packing needs to finish and when you expect to receive the new keys. Mark each date as confirmed or provisional.
Share the uncertainty with your removalist. Ask how much notice is needed to arrange redelivery and what happens if the expected date changes. Do not treat an estimate from another party as a confirmed removal booking.
Create three inventories
Travel with you: identification, medication, keys, essential documents, chargers, work equipment and the clothing you need for the gap. Keep items you cannot comfortably be without out of the storage load.
May need during the gap: seasonal clothing, children’s equipment, extra work supplies or household items needed if the wait extends. Discuss how retrieval would work before packing these away.
Can wait until redelivery: furniture and boxes that will only be needed at the new home. Group and label them for the destination rooms.
A room list and numbered boxes make later checks easier. Keep your own copy of the inventory where you can access it without opening a stored computer or document box.
Ask practical questions about storage
Compare the whole arrangement, including collection, storage period, access and redelivery. Ask which goods are accepted, how items should be prepared, how retrieval is booked and what charges or notice periods apply.
Do not assume stored belongings are available on demand. Explain likely access needs before the storage plan is agreed. For mobile storage, discuss the delivery location and property access as well as the space needed for the contents.

Pack for a longer interval than a direct move
Use clear labels that will still make sense after several weeks. Add a box number, destination room and brief description. Put matching labels on the inventory rather than relying on memory.
Follow appliance manufacturers’ preparation instructions and the storage provider’s requirements. Ask about any goods that may be restricted, including fuels, chemicals, batteries or perishable contents. Do not pack uncertain items first and resolve suitability after collection.

Describe every stage in the quote
Packing and any materials or box delivery.
Collection from the current property, including its access conditions.
The storage arrangement and expected duration.
Any planned retrieval or additional handling.
Redelivery to the new property and its access requirements.
Unpacking or assembly that has been agreed.
Ask what changes if storage lasts longer or the redelivery address changes. Separating the stages makes it easier to understand the effect of a date change without confusing it with the original collection.
Plan the first night at the new home
Create a small first-night group: bedding, towels, toiletries, basic kitchen items and the things your household needs immediately. Tell the removalist which rooms matter first, while leaving the safe loading order to the crew.
Before redelivery, confirm keys, parking, lifts and access windows. Check that renovations or cleaning have left the agreed rooms available to receive furniture.
What if the new date changes again?
Update the removalist promptly and confirm the revised booking in writing. Ask whether the storage period, retrieval needs or destination scope must change. Keep one current plan so everyone works from the same dates.
