Looking for art removalists in Sydney? Start with the artwork, its condition and the full route at both addresses. Fine art and sculpture moves need a plan for fragile surfaces, weight, packing and final placement. JB Removals assesses these details before recommending the crew, equipment and transport.

Whether you are moving a private art collection, a sculpture in a foyer or artworks as part of a commercial relocation, send photographs and dimensions with your enquiry. Explain any handling instructions from the artist, gallery or conservator so the proposed move matches the needs of each piece.

Fine art removals start with an inventory

List paintings, framed works, sculptures and other delicate pieces separately. Material, condition and construction matter as much as size. A heavy stone sculpture and a light, fragile artwork can need very different support.

  • Photograph each piece from several angles, including its base and frame.
  • Give dimensions, reliable weight information and the number of items.
  • Identify loose parts, delicate projections, glazing and existing damage.
  • Share any written instructions about orientation, lifting points or surface contact.

Keep a labelled inventory and dated condition photographs for collection and delivery. If a work is unstable or damaged, ask its maker or a qualified conservator about preparation before arranging transport.

Plan artwork packing and protection

Agree the packing method before collection. Suitable cushioning, surface separation, corner protection and support depend on the artwork and finish. A blanket or standard moving box is not the right solution for every piece.

Tell JB whether the artwork already has a fitted crate or transport frame. Include the packed dimensions and weight. If custom crating or conservation-grade materials are required, confirm who will supply them and whether they are included in the quote.

For paintings and framed art, flag loose glazing, delicate frame mouldings and surfaces that cannot be touched. Discuss packing and unpacking support alongside the handling instructions; avoid applying tape or wrapping directly to a sensitive surface without appropriate advice.

Assess sculpture weight and difficult access

A sculpture may be tall, unevenly balanced or secured to a plinth. Provide its total dimensions, base details and reliable weight, plus information about any attachments. Identify who is responsible for releasing fixings or preparing a separate base.

Measure doorways, turns, stairs and lifts along the complete route. Include the room where the artwork will finish, rather than only the building entrance. Lift load limits, floor capacity and narrow landings can affect the handling method.

Our heavy and specialist removals service assesses mechanical handling around the item and access. For steps or staircases, see stair climber and managed moving options. Equipment selection follows the assessment of the full route.

Coordinate collection, transport and delivery

Give both addresses, preferred dates and the contact person at each site. For apartments, offices and galleries, confirm loading areas, lift bookings and permitted access times with building management.

  • Identify where the vehicle can park and the distance to the entrance.
  • Keep packing and receiving spaces clear.
  • Agree who will attend collection and inspect the delivery.
  • Mark the final position and any unpacking or placement requirements.

Discuss protection for floors, walls and doorways at both properties. If hanging, mounting, electrical work or specialist installation is needed, allocate those tasks separately in the move plan.

Compare artwork transport services

Ask for a written scope covering the inventory, access assumptions, packing, crew, transport and destination placement. State deadlines and any building restrictions before comparing estimates.

Artwork moving costs depend on the pieces, packed size, weight, route, distance and level of preparation. Custom crates, lifting arrangements, extra access work and storage can change the scope. Confirm inclusions, exclusions and any additional charges before booking.

Request written details of applicable cover, limits and exclusions for the particular artworks. Share any declared-value or handling requirements with the relevant provider. Keep the agreed scope and condition record together.

Art storage and related Sydney removals

If collection and delivery dates do not align, discuss storage before the move is confirmed. Tell JB about any temperature, humidity, security or access requirements specified for the collection.

Our EasyBox mobile storage page explains the general storage service. Suitability for an artwork must be confirmed separately; do not assume ordinary storage provides a controlled environment.

Artwork can also be included in the planning for a Sydney home move or office relocation. Identify the delicate items separately so their preparation and handling are assessed within the wider project.

JB Removals mechanically tilting a 700kg marble sculpture to negotiate a restricted lift route
A documented JB sculpture move using mechanical control.

A sculpture move from JB’s project gallery

JB’s specialist project gallery shows a 700kg marble sculpture measuring 2.06 metres, mechanically tilted to enter a smaller replacement lift. The job illustrates why height, balance and available clearance must be assessed together.

See the sculpture project and other specialist moves for the published project photographs. Each artwork and site needs its own handling plan.

Art and sculpture moving questions

What should I send for an artwork moving quote?

Send an item list, clear photographs, dimensions, reliable weights, both addresses and your preferred dates. Include stairs, lifts, doorways, parking and the final placement area. Attach any artist, gallery or conservator instructions and identify existing crates or transport frames.

Can a heavy sculpture be moved through stairs or a small lift?

It depends on the sculpture and the complete route. Weight, balance, clearances, supporting surfaces and equipment operating space all need assessment. Send measurements and photographs before booking; a site inspection may be needed.

Are packing, crating and installation included?

Confirm each task in the written quote. Identify existing packaging, any custom crate requirements and who will prepare, unpack or install the work. Hanging, mounting and specialist installation should be agreed separately rather than assumed to be part of transport.

How do I prepare for delivery of fine art?

Clear the receiving route, confirm building access and have the agreed contact person available. Identify the final position and check that any supports or installation arrangements are ready. Compare the artwork with the collection condition record and raise concerns promptly.
